If you feel the urge to branch out and try something different, why not spend happy hour inside the bountiful belly of a Baobab Tree. The Big Baobab attracts 7 000 thirsty visitors every year to enjoy a cold beverage at the bar inside its hollowed trunk. Not just any Baobab, it’s the biggest in the country and possibly the oldest in the world!
Baobabs hollow naturally when they are more than 1 000-years-old and carbon dating has estimated the tree to be about 6 000 years old. With its 47 metre circumference the tree is so wide that it takes 40 adults with their arms outstretched to encircle it.
This majestic specimen is located on the farm of Heather and Doug van Heerden who started the bar in 1993, after discovering the hollow in the Baobab. It’s not only the most unusual place to have a drink but it’s world famous, even appearing on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. Cheers to that!
