Hypothermia is a condition in which the core body temperature drops below that at which normal body functions can take place, causing organ failure and, in severe cases, can result in a coma and even death.

Considerable shivering

Jaw muscles tightening

Difficulty with speech

COLDER

Signs of Moderate Hypothermia:

Confusion

Lack of control over body movements (slow and laboured)

Violent shivering

Lips and ears appear blue

COLDEST

Signs of Severe Hypothermia:

Patient is comatose

Cold to touch

Heart rate drops

WARNING: Patients must receive immediate medical attention. 

 Do's and Don'ts

      Move the patient to a warmer environment

·         Remove wet clothing

·         Try and warm the patient with additional clothing and blankets (the head experiences the highest rate of heat loss)

·         Give the patient warm sweet liquids BUT only if they are fully conscious!

·         Do not rub cold areas, rather warm them passively

·         Do not move a patient with a possible neck or back injury

·         Do not drink alcohol when hypothermic 

·         NEVER ignore the first warming signs and symptoms of hypothermia
