Maliba Lodge

Start planning to pack your beanies and thermals, and embrace the cold with a wonderful winter getaway! After all, winter is as good a reason as any to curl up in front of a crackling fire, enjoy fresh outdoor adventures or simply lap up spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, misty rivers and crisp golden forests.

“…the first and only five-star lodge in Lesotho…”

Nestled over 1 000 metres above sea level, deep in the Maluti Mountains, it’s called “The Destination in the Sky” for good reason! This first (and only) five-star lodge in Lesotho offers spectacular scenery with six luxury stone or thatch chalets to choose from - each with its own fireplace, private patio and viewing deck, not to mention the big bathtub that offers breathtaking mountain views!

The gourmet restaurant, bar and a variety of cosy communal areas all open out to a massive deck. And, once you’ve settled in, there’s plenty more to do. Explore rugged, snow brushed landscapes from the back of a Basotho pony, go for a crisp early morning hike, take the dinosaur footprint tour or, for the culture vultures - a visit to the local community is definitely a trip worth making. For the more adventurous, nearby attractions also include skiing between June and July.

Maliba Lodge is the perfect winter getaway for families, groups of friends and couples on all budgets, and rates are inclusive of all meals.

Fairfield Mountain Cottages

“…a warm and cosy old farm style feel that adds to its rustic charm.”

This picturesque and fully productive fruit farm at the foot of the Skurweberg Mountains is just six kilometres from the town of Ceres. You’ll soon dissolve into the quiet setting of these cute mountain cottages tucked away at the foot of the mountain. The cottages vary, but all offer a warm and cosy old farm style feel that adds to its rustic charm. Whichever one you choose, the winter backdrop for all three cottages is a sheet of water cascading down the rocky surface of the mountain, while snowcaps surround you in the fruitful Ceres Valley.

It’s an ideal spot for either lounging around or indulging in an array of winter activities. Hiking routes in the area are easy and accessible for all guests. There’s also mountain biking, fishing, canoeing and bird watching. A favourite of the owners is an early morning or late afternoon walk along the orchards farm roads.

This gorgeous mountain retreat is enough to soothe any tired city dweller's soul.

Skitterland Guesthouse

“…the perfect place to experience a ‘real winter’!”

The tiny Karoo town of Sutherland in the Northern Cape is one the coldest locations in the country. In fact, it’s freezing with record temperatures reaching lows of minus 18˚C, which aptly makes it the perfect place to experience a ‘real winter’!

With its combination of luxury and old-world charm, Skitterland Guesthouse is a great place to stay, offering guests beautifully appointed suites equipped with an indoor fireplace, underfloor heating, electric blankets, down duvets and woollen blankets.

During the day, you’ll soon forget how cold it actually is when you witness the wonder of seeing tiny white flakes twirling down from the sky and inhale an extra deep breath of crisp, clean air. And, as the sun sets, it’s so much more magical as the big night skies attract visitors from around the world, waiting to be enveloped by a rolling blanket of stars.

Keep warm by tucking into a classic Karoo dinner of slow-roasted lamb and sip on a sherry in front of a crackling fire – ah, the simple pleasures of life!
