There are many dedicated men and women who are at the forefront of the war of protecting Africa’s rhinos, but this job requires more than just manpower. Over the years poaching has advanced at an alarming rate and anti-poaching units have needed to develop more specialised ways in combating this ongoing battle.
Despite this, one of the most simple and successful methods is training dogs, not only to detect contraband but to deploy them into the field to track and immobilise the poachers. Paulo Ngongola and Reward Sithole devote their lives to train these dogs to do just that.
With this commodity being worth more than gold, human greed and misconceived beliefs are driving this species towards extinction.
The poaching epidemic is by no means over, however using these dedicated dogs paired with their skilled handlers, they are already making a huge impact in the Klaserie Reserve.
