Stargazing in Sutherland

Northern Cape

The small town of Sutherland has achieved acclaim for being one of the coldest places in South Africa. In winter, temperatures drop well below freezing, however that is not the reason people flock here. Sutherland offers one of the clearest skies, and with the pollution-free air and altitude further enhancing it, this the best place for stargazing! It’s for this reason that SALT (South African Large Telescope) was built on a hill outside of the town. It’s the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world! The massive telescope is situated at the South African Astronomical Observatory and is quite something to see, along with other smaller stargazing telescopes to use and enjoy.

Even if stargazing and astronomy is not your thing, Sutherland is a romantic little town and certainly the right place to catch sight of a shooting star and make your wish come true.
