If you are in the Storms River area, this giant Outeniqua yellowwood is a site worth seeing! This tree is estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old and towers above the rest at an impressive height of 36.6 metres. The trunk has a circumference of nearly nine metres, and the canopy boasts a massive spread of 33 metres.
To get up close to this beauty, take an easy walk through the gorgeous Tsitsikamma Forest, following the well signposted ‘Big Tree’ boards that will take you along a 500-metre wooden boardwalk and lead you straight to the yellowwood giant. Walking there takes about 10 minutes, although you can choose to take a longer route and really absorb the beauty of the indigenous forest with all its natural wonder of subtle smells, ever-present birdsong and the enchanting sight of small insects, butterflies and mammals that live and thrive there. A visit to The Big Tree is certainly a great excuse to breathe in some fresh forest air, and be humbled by the enormity of Mother Nature’s presence.
