The Botanical Bar stems from two ideas: the current trend for making quality small-batch gins, rums, brandies, craft beers and wine; and the incredible smells and textures of the plants in the medicinal and useful plants section the Green Point Park Biodiversity Garden, which inspired owner Anthony Gird and head barmen, Peter and Kenan, to create their own botanical tinctures, bitters, syrups, vermouths and "shrubs". These form a 'library' of flavours from which their bartenders recreate their own imaginative classics. They also dream up amazing non-alcoholic options!
The Botanical Bar food features a mezze-style selection of dips, breads and pickles for the bar. They use local, seasonal ingredients, incorporating South African indigenous botanicals in dressings, oils, infusions and bitters. The seated area offers more substantial sharing plates with a focus on vegetables, like their carrot, pickled grape and pea shoot salad, and cauliflower dip with curried paaper bites; and a few fish and meat options with their own take on a few local South African dishes, like smoked snoek and spekboom pâté with seed crackers, and venison frikkadels with wild mint salsa and pickled red onion.
To complete the theme, the stylish interior has also been specially designed to connect with nature by bringing the outdoors in.
